Bio  A god of death. The personification of the actual phenomenon, in fact. So when the thread of someone's life is cut by the Fates, Thanatos is there to see that the souls of those dead find their way properly to the afterlife. He is the son of Nyx (Night) and Erebus (Darkness), and as such, is one of the many children who embody aspects of existence. His twin brother is Hypnos (sleep). Other siblings include Eris, Momus, Geras, and Moros - strife, blame, old age, and fate. Thanatos himself is predominantly the god of peaceful death, although he and his sister Ker (the bringer of violent death) have been known to swap duties if they're ever feeling lazy. Appearances in mythology include a cameo in the Iliad where Zeus charges him and his brother to deliver the body of the slain Sarpedon back to Lykia. He also featured in one of Heracles's tales, where he was wrestled and bested by the hero and so never came for the soul of Heracles's friend's wife. One of the only times he's ever shirked his duty, for the record. In later years, after the Greeks, his image softened up a little bit. Before, when he was called 'hateful even to the deathless gods', gave way to perception as a kindly youth; something he much prefers, for the record. Beyond the obvious certain factor of gloom that comes with doing his job, Thanatos is quite optimistic and cheery. At least, certainly much more so than the god of death really ought to be. He cracks jokes and is loathe to show hostility to anyone. He is generally on the lookout and there to watch the backs of mortals, and is willing to play advocate for them if his fellow Olympian brethren somehow draw them (that is, the whole of humanity) into their dealings with each other. Also happens to have a thing for Monty Python and Mel Brooks films; comedies in general, really. An ice cream addict. Essentially a far from grim reaper. [Not Thanatos, obviously. Not Ben Foster or Leo Legrand, or anyone else who may end up as his face at some point.] |
